Equality in Essence and Complementarity in Role: A Biblical and BTT Perspective on God's Design for Men and Women

By Dr. Michael King | June 26, 2026

The relationship between men and women has become one of the most contested issues facing the contemporary church. Modern culture often emphasizes absolute equality between men and women to the extent of denying any meaningful distinction in roles. Conversely, some traditional views have tended toward another extreme, placing women in a subordinate or even inferior position and suppressing their spiritual gifts and ministries.

Scripture, however, teaches neither an egalitarianism that erases God-created distinctions nor a patriarchalism that diminishes women. Rather, the Bible simultaneously reveals two inseparable truths:

First, men and women are completely equal in essence, value, salvation, and grace.

Second, God has established distinct yet complementary role structures within the family and the church.

Biblical Tension Theology (BTT) argues that biblical truth is frequently revealed through dual lines of revelation that must be held together rather than collapsed into one another. Neglecting either line inevitably distorts the fullness of God's revelation. Therefore, the church must faithfully maintain both the equality of men and women and the complementarity of their God-ordained roles if it is to recover the whole counsel of God.

I. Men and Women Are Completely Equal in Essence and Value

  1. Men and Women Are Equally Created in the Image of God

Scripture declares:

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them" (Gen. 1:27, ESV).

Both men and women are created in the image of God (Imago Dei) and therefore possess equal dignity, worth, and personhood.¹

Scripture never teaches that men bear the image of God more fully than women, nor does it portray women as mere appendages to men. Rather, men and women together represent and reflect the glory of God.

Therefore:

This equality is not culturally constructed but grounded in creation itself.

  1. Men and Women Are Equally Fallen in Sin

The apostle Paul writes:
