Definition:
The simultaneous affirmation of the “already” and “not yet” dimensions of salvation within redemptive history. The same salvific reality exists in present and consummate forms.
Three Diagnostic Criteria
- Do the two sides differ primarily in timing, stage, or mode of realization rather than in value?
- Does Scripture affirm present grace as real while directing believers toward future consummation?
- Would removing the “not yet” lead to triumphalism, and removing the “already” lead to discouragement and paralysis?
Two-Tense Eschatology Tension Pairs:
- Already ↔ Not Yet
- New Creation ↔ Groaning Creation
- Eternal Life ↔ Resurrection Hope
- Kingdom Present ↔ Kingdom Future
