Means & Ends refers to the biblical conjunction of God’s ordained purposes and the appointed instruments, paths, commands, disciplines, warnings, and patterns through which He brings those purposes to fulfillment.
God not only determines what He will accomplish; He also establishes how He ordinarily accomplishes it. His promises do not make gospel proclamation, faith, repentance, obedience, prayer, perseverance, suffering, discipline, or mutual ministry unnecessary. Rather, these appointed means belong to the very order through which God fulfills His purposes.
The means do not operate independently of God, possess power in themselves, or merit the promised outcome. They are effective because God appoints them, sustains them, and works through them by His Word and Spirit.
In the ordinary course of providence and redemption, God works through the means He has established, while remaining sovereignly free to act extraordinarily according to His will.
God’s ordained ends establish rather than eliminate the necessity of His appointed means.
God sovereignly determines and faithfully accomplishes His redemptive purposes.
The fulfillment of redemption therefore rests finally upon God’s character, faithfulness, wisdom, and power—not upon the independent ability, merit, or consistency of human beings.
God’s purposes are neither uncertain possibilities nor goals dependent ultimately upon creaturely strength. What He has promised, He is able and faithful to accomplish.
The certainty of God’s purpose does not make human action unnecessary. Scripture repeatedly joins divine purpose to divinely appointed means.
